Sector Risk Organisms (SROs) are unwanted pests and diseases (biosecurity threats) that could damage New Zealand’s primary industries, negatively impacting on production, profitability, competitiveness, the environment and our way of life. The following is a list of SROs which Potatoes New Zealand have identified as likely to negatively affect the New Zealand potato industry should they become established in New Zealand.

 

Arthropods

  • Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decimlineata)
  • Epitrix similaris (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)
  • Leaf mining flies (Liriomyza sativaeL. bryoniaeL. trifoliiL. huidobrensisL. nietzkeiL. cepaeChromatomyia horticolaPhytomyza gymnostroma)
  • Potato Flea Beetle (Epitrix papa, Epitrix tuberis, Epitrix cucumeris, Epitrix subcrinita)
  • Potato leafhopper (Empoasca fabae)
  • Red spider mite (Tetranychus evansi)

Bacteria

  • Blackleg (Dickeya solani)
  • Late Blight A2 mating strain (Phytophthora infestans)
  • Potato brown rot (Ralstonia solanacearum)
  • Potato ring rot (Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus)
  • Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum haplotype B
  • Pectobacterium Polaris

Phytoplasmas

  • Columbia basin purple top phytoplasma (Candidatus phytoplasma spp.)
  • Potato stolbur phytoplasma (Candidatus phytoplasma solani)

Nematodes

  • Columbia root knot nematode (Meloidogyne chitwoodi)
  • Dagger nematodes (Xiphinema spp,)
