Potatoes NZ provides resources, ideas and tips to help teachers feature potatoes in their lesson plans. Potatoes can be included in the New Zealand curriculum at Levels 1, 2 and 3 in the three food related strands: Home Economics, Technology and Hospitality.

Take children on a potato discovery adventure

Potatoes NZ maintain a supply of resources which focus on two areas that combine to give children knowledge and understanding:

  • global – to give children a perspective on how one food can make a huge impact on people and communities
  • skills – to teach each child to cook and to foster personal responsibility.

Education Programmes

Stand For Children
Provision and co-ordination of resources in the “Spudtacular” programme run in the Stand Children’s Services Villages (over 1700 children in 2012).
Just Cook – young families
Co-sponsor of the Just Cook programme run by the NZ Nutrition Foundation. Provision of potato related recipe cards for use in the programme.
NSSCC – teenagers
Sponsor of the NSSCC run by City & Guilds with 10 regional competitions culminating in a national final judged by celebrity chefs. Potato is specified as the starch in the main and Potatoes NZ Inc. is able to use the recipes and images from the competition.
5 a day – all ages
Garden to table – primary
NZ Culinary Fare – (young adults)
Sponsor of the NZ Culinary Fare run by the Chefs Association which sees secondary students, hospitality students and industry professionals line up in a range of competitions designed to test talent and technical skill. Potato is specified as the starch in the beef, pork and duck competitions. Potatoes NZ Inc. is able to use the recipes and images from the competition.
