SUMMARY:Non Chemical Weed Management Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr Charles ‘Merf’ Merfield. A complete overview of non chemical weed management as part of Integrated Weed Management (IWM) including addressing herbicide resistance. \n\n\n\nDate: Friday 26 July 2024Time: 9am to 5pmLocation: PIA Event Centre\, 55 Ward Street\, Pukekohe 2120Cost: $450.00 (incl. GST) \n\n\n\nThe purpose of this in person workshop is to give a complete overview of non-chemical weed management as part of Integrated Weed Management (IWM) and will include addressing herbicide resistance. \n\n\n\nMerf is head of the BHU Future Farming Centre and Merfield Agronomy Ltd and co-owner and director of PhysicalWeeding. He is also the OrganicNZ 2024 Organic Leader of the year for excellence in science communication. \n\n\n\nThe primary audience is cropping (horticulture and arable) farmers & growers as it is these production systems that have the largest challenge with weeds. Perennial crop (e.g. vines\, apples) producers will also benefit with one section dedicated to perennial crops (see below). For anyone dealing with herbicide resistant weeds\, this workshop is the start of your solution. There are also some benefits for livestock / pasture systems in terms of the overall concepts of non-chemical and integrated weed management. \n\n\n\nConsultants and advisors working with farmer and grower clients\, particularly in cropping\, will gain considerable benefit\, especially regarding the latest technologies. Scientists\, especially those dealing with herbicide resistance and working on the transition to non-chemical weed management\, will gain valuable insights. The content assumes a reasonable level of understanding and practical experience of commercial agriculture and horticulture systems including weed management. This is a really full on and intense workshop – bring your thinking head! Plenty of caffeine is provided! \n\n\n\nThis includes a colour handout printout of the presentations. It also includes full catering includes tea\, real coffee and snack on arrival\, morning and afternoon teas and finger food lunch.Registration is essential as places are limited. \n\n\n\nTo register please email charles@merfield.com including: \n\n\n\n\nYour / your business name and address for the invoice.\n\n\n\nThe number of people from your business who will be attending and their names and emails.\n\n\n\nA bit of your background\, e.g.\, farmer\, grower\, consultant\, farm system\, e.g.\, vegetable\, fruit\, so they have an idea of who is coming.\n\n\n\nAny dietary requirements.\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, please visit: Charles Merfield – One day seminar-workshop on non-chemical weed management

SUMMARY:Field Discussion Day - South Canterbury
DESCRIPTION:Explore practical examples of regenerative farming on Mike Porter’s hill country farm in South Canterbury\, with a focus on tackling emerging herbicide resistance. \n\n\n\nFor Mike\, addressing soil erosion and degradation was the driving force behind adopting no-till and regenerative practices over 20 years ago. His farm now thrives with nutrient-rich soils and no bare ground. Mike is eager to share his journey—the wins\, lessons\, and strategies for managing herbicide resistance and weed challenges. \n\n\n\nWe’re also thrilled to have Dr Charles ‘Merf’ Merfield\, an international expert in non-chemical weed management on hand to discuss innovative mechanical weed management techniques\, particularly as part of managing herbicide resistance. \n\n\n\nTopics of Discussion \n\n\n\n\nThe journey to adopting regenerative practices: motivations\, goals\, and results.\n\n\n\nKey techniques: no-till farming\, crop residue retention\, multi-species cover crops\, and moisture conservation.\n\n\n\nManaging weeds sustainably: alternatives to herbicides\, including cutting-edge mechanical methods\, ecological weed management and resistance prevention.\n\n\n\n\nWhat to Expect \n\n\n\n\nA short farm tour showcasing regenerative practices in action.\n\n\n\nEngaging discussions with like-minded farmers and experts.\n\n\n\nRefreshments provided.\n\n\n\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to a day of shared learning and practical inspiration! For more information contact Jo@quorumsense.org.nz 0210 304 783

SUMMARY:Webinar: Soil Microbes - why are these important?
DESCRIPTION:Agriculture has long managed microbes\, largely focusing on the control of disease pathogens\, but this is just a tiny slice of the microbial world. Linda’s research interests include the management of soil microbes to suppress plant diseases and promote plant growth. Microbes are powerful partners in plant productivity\, what can we do to enhance the capacity of microbe communities to provide benefits to our systems? \n\n\n\nProf Linda Kinkel specialises in plant pathology at the University of Minnesota and will join this breakfast webinar to share her research with New Zealand growers and update us on the developing area of microbiome management.
