New Zealand’s potato industry is valued at approximately $1.0 billion annually. Frozen products and fries contribute a third of the total value, with 34% from fresh potatoes, 29% from crisps, and the remaining 1.4% from seed potatoes.

In 2024, around 154 registered growers produced 419,200 tonnes of potatoes, from 8,500 hectares predominantly in the growing areas of Canterbury, Pukekohe and Manawatu.

Domestic retail is responsible for 87% of the total value of New Zealand potatoes and potato products with the remaining 13% from exports.

According to figures from the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation’s statistics division, New Zealand had the world’s highest yields in 2022. It was the only country to exceed the 50 tonnes/hectare level at 50.9 tonnes/hectare. That compared to 49.1 tonnes/hectare for the USA. Denmark had the highest European yields at 44.2 tonnes/hectare.

Potatoes New Zealand represents growers’ interests, and is committed to listening to, enabling and promoting better outcomes for the New Zealand potato industry.

Becoming incorporated in 2012 (Incorporated Society Number 2559200), previously Potatoes New Zealand had been operating as a product group within Horticulture New Zealand.
