Potatoes New Zealand is profiling amazing young people in the horticulture industry to demonstrate the diverse opportunities available and to encourage more people into this great sector.
We caught up with Amber Davy, the Quality and Field Manager for Eurogrow Potatoes Ltd. She is a shining light in Canterbury where she works with growers supporting as best she can.
Growing up in Taihape, on a hill country sheep and beef farm, Amber Davy enjoyed the outdoors and farming environment. She attended the Fielding Agricultural High School and then went on to study a Bachelor of Agriculture, Post graduate diploma in Horticultural Science and Post graduate certificate in Applied Science at Lincoln University.
Amber Davy started in the industry rouging seed potatoes, then she progressed to working for a seed grower before starting at Eurogrow as a field representative in 2019.
Amber has now been the Quality and Field Manager at Eurogrow Potatoes since 2022.
Her job entails overseeing the Eurogrow South Island trial program as well as the new variety/ high generation seed programs. She also works alongside Elliott Crowley, looking after quality assurance and seed growers, helping to ensure that the best quality seed potatoes are produced.
She enjoys many things about the horticulture industry, including the innovation, the constant learning and growth opportunities, the diversity in the work and especially the ‘down to earth’ people.
Being an outdoors person, in her free time Amber likes getting out on her dirt bike, gardening, camping, and generally being outside in nature as well as spending time with her friends and family.
Best described as an outgoing, helpful person and definitely a ‘spud nerd’, Amber really enjoys being part of the potato industry.
Amber says that every season has had its challenges, but these have all been learning opportunities and she has enjoyed finding solutions to overcome them. She has also been very lucky with the support and encouragement she has received from everyone throughout the course of her time in the industry.
Looking to the future, in the next five years Amber hopes to keep learning as much as possible to continue to support growers and the industry in any way she can.
