Europe Trip 2026 Ends on a High

The 2026 Grower European Trip concluded at Potatoes Europe held in Springe Germany, an impressive showcase of the scale, innovation, and capability of the global potato industry.

Potato Europe gave our growers the opportunity to look at new technology, varieties and opportunities they can use to improve their own operations.

Throughout the trip, participants had the opportunity to visit growers, researchers, industry organisations and businesses, gaining valuable insights into how things are done across Europe.

Europe Trip 2026

While Potatoes Europe was certainly a highlight, the entire trip provided plenty of learning and sharing opportunities.

Delegates were welcomed with exceptional hospitality at every stop and experienced first-hand the passion and professionalism that exists throughout the European potato sector.

Just as important were the connections made within the group itself. Participants formed a great team and thoroughly enjoyed the journey together, which included travel starting in Amsterdam, across the Netherlands for visits, Emmeloord, then onto Hanover for visits across Germany and then Potato Europe.

Everyone returned home with new perspectives, valuable knowledge, and ideas along with new friendships.

First Potato Shipment to Taiwan

In August, New Zealand successfully shipped its first container of potatoes to Taiwan, marking an important milestone for the industry. Until recently, New Zealand did not have phytosanitary access to Taiwan, making this achievement the result of significant work and collaboration across the sector. The first shipment originated from the South Island, and we are excited to see how this opportunity develops, creating potential for future export growth and strengthening New Zealand’s presence in international markets.

Vegetable Sector Pre Election Debate

In September, representatives from across the vegetable industry gathered in Pukekohe for the Vegetable Sector Pre Election Political Debate. The event provided an opportunity for growers, processors and industry stakeholders to hear directly from political representatives about their parties’ priorities for the future of New Zealand’s vegetable sector.

Discussion focused on several key issues facing the industry, including resource management reform, energy security, grower confidence and investment, vegetable consumption, and access to crop protection tools and innovation. Representatives shared their perspectives and responded to questions on how they would support a resilient, productive and sustainable vegetable sector in the years ahead.

The debate reinforced the importance of ensuring decision makers understand the challenges and opportunities facing vegetable growers. Events such as this provide a valuable platform for industry leaders to advocate for the sector and contribute to conversations that will help shape New Zealand’s food production future.

Spring Summit Brings Industry Together

The 2026 Spring Summit welcomed growers, researchers and industry representatives to Te Ahikawariki for a day of learning, discussion and connection. The event showcased a wide range of research and demonstration projects currently underway across the vegetable sector, providing attendees with valuable insights into the latest developments and practical applications for their businesses.

Topics included potato disease management, potato irrigation, onion nutrition, integrated weed management, fall armyworm management, brassica adjuvants and research into kūmara production. A mix of presentations and on farm demonstrations gave participants the opportunity to hear directly from researchers, ask questions and see the work in action.

The event received positive feedback, with attendees praising the practical nature of the content and the relevance of the research being presented. The Spring Summit continues to play an important role in connecting growers with independent research and fostering collaboration across the vegetable industry. A sincere thank you to all presenters, attendees and the Horticentre Charitable Trust for helping make the event a success.

Potatoes New Zealand recently visited Waitetuna School to learn more about its Garden to Table programme and see the positive impact it is having on students.

The programme gives children the opportunity to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh food while developing practical skills and confidence. It was encouraging to see how students are engaging with food production and gaining a greater understanding of where their food comes from.

Initiatives such as Garden to Table play an important role in helping young people build healthy eating habits and develop an appreciation for the effort involved in producing fresh food. They also provide valuable opportunities for students to connect with the land, work as a team and learn lifelong skills.

Potatoes New Zealand is proud to support programmes that encourage food education and help inspire the next generation of growers, food producers and informed consumers. A big thank you to the students, teachers and volunteers who make this programme possible.
