In September 2018, a New Zealand potato processing facility identified a symptom of Potato Mop Top Virus (PMTV) in a tuber on a processing line.
A biosecurity incursion was announced and along with the Ministry for Primary Industries, a response was launched.
It became evident early in the response that the disease couldn’t be eradicated and the best outcome for potato growers is industry led, long-term management.
Biosecurity New Zealand continues to support our industry in helping us with long-term management, which includes non-regulatory controls and voluntary agreement.
Potatoes New Zealand has conducted a survey of growing areas and developed an identification guide for growers.
