Having been operating for 25 years, Appleby Fresh is no stranger to the fresh foods market. Growing a long list of over 30 varieties of produce from potatoes, beans and brassicas to cucurbits and herbs, they are continuously busy keeping the region well feed.
With 45 staff, which grows to 90 over the summer period, the team at Appleby Fresh led by Mark O’Connor, a fourth generation local to the Waimea Plains, have been producing potatoes for the last 20 years and specialise in Jersey Bennies. They grow these delicious potatoes in a six week window, starting in mid October.
Appleby Fresh attributes many of its successes to its hard working team, who go above and beyond in all weather, and enjoy the part they play in providing fresh produce to New Zealanders, however they do acknowledge that market gardening is a tough industry to be involved in and they work through each challenge together.
Distributing their produce mainly to MG Fresh Produce Group, a successful co-operative, Appleby Fresh is able to connect with other growers and industry leaders and apply shared knowledge to their operations. So next time you enjoy a fresh vegetable in the Nelson area, you are potentially eating Appleby Fresh produce and as they say – Fresh is best!
