Practical advice for preparing for and responding to extreme weather events, earthquakes and so on. During an adverse event, Potatoes New Zealand will update growers with regional information and grower‑specific guidance.

Emergency Contacts

Life threatening emergency – Phone 111 immediately.

If mobile coverage is down:

  • Dial 111 first — your phone will try any available network.
  • Move to higher or more open ground if you can not connect.
  • Try a landline, satellite device, UHF/VHF radio, or ask someone nearby for help.
  • Keep phones charged and carry a power bank.
  • Know how to manually switch networks on your phone.

If life or safety is at risk, use every available option to raise the alarm.

Wellbeing Support

Adverse events are stressful, it is normal to feel overwhelmed.

Growers are encouraged to:

  • Make a simple plan: list priorities and actions.
  • Stay connected with neighbours and your local grower network.
  • Attend community or wellbeing events when possible.
  • Ask for help early, do not wait until things feel unmanageable.
  • Eat well, rest when you can, and take short breaks off farm.
  • Acknowledge the impact, but focus on the next steps forward.
