Potatoes New Zealand partners with Trade Members and Associate Members. We are shining a light on our Trade Members, about who they are and where they have come from. Let’s meet Alex McDonald Ltd:

Alex McDonald Ltd was founded by Alex McDonald in 1941 and was continued on by his son Colin McDonald until selling out to Kerry Hughes.

The company produces High Health Seed Potatoes to the New Zealand potato industry. All Almac seed is grown in Canterbury and supplied to clients throughout New Zealand, from Invercargill to Kaitaia – supplying all sectors of the potato industry, but mainly the commercial growers.

Almac’s point of difference is that they have been here for 83 years, have their own glasshouse, producing their own mini tubers, grow their own seed, operate their own machinery, have their own pack house, in other words they are growers as well, and understand the pressures associated with being a grower.

Simply put “they have skin in the game”, and now they have some third-generation seed growers, growing seed with them.

Alex McDonald Ltd is a proud Business Supporter to the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue.

They are continually communicating with European Breeding partners to bring the latest environmentally friendly and sustainable varieties to the New Zealand market.

Almac is currently entering a succession phase and the younger generation, along with their breeding partners will introduce new technologies and growing practices to the industry.

They will continue to lead the way in the New Zealand’s Seed Potato Industry and build on their relationships with our breeders, growers and clients alike.
