SFF Measure it and Manage it, Year 2 Report Available Now
Maintaining a balance between soil nitrogen (N) supply and crop N demand is central to the profitable and sustainable use of N fertiliser. This seeks to develop a quick test mass balance (QTMB) to calculate fertilizer N requirements as a function of crop N demand (determined from literature), soil mineral N levels (determined with the nitrate quick test) and N supply from mineralisation of N from organic matter (determined with the AMN test). Psyllid and Liberibacter in Potatoes in New Zealand: Biology, Transmission, and Implications for Management
Psyllids were first reported in 2006 in New Zealand and Liberibacter bacterium was identified in 2008 as the possible cause of the Zebra Chip disease. This excellent academic paper reviews the current understanding, knowledge gap and recommendations made for future research.

Pest & Disease – Pest Disease Mobile Phone App from James Hutton Institute & AHDB Potatoes
Buntata is a great little potato pest and disease identification phone app for aiding in the identification of plant diseases in the field. The first release is for the identification of potato pests, diseases and other problems. Click here to download
Process Improvement – Potato Tuber Spectral Imaging Project Started
An agreement has been signed between PNZ, Massey University and the Food Industry Enabling Technologies (FIET) to fund a 3 year Potato Tuber Spectral Imaging Project.The project will develop a system for spectral image-based sorting and grading of intact potato tubers to predict the presence of Liberibacter and other diseases. International Market Updates
April fry exports were more than a thousand tonnes down on March but still more than 10% higher than the same month last year, at 5 616 tonnes. This helped pushed annual shipments up 30.2% to a new record of 77,062 tonnes. The average price of exports in March was NZ$1 437/tonne, 7.0% higher than March 2017. Click here to read more

Fresh Potatoes Promotion – Spuds Star of the Show at HETTANZ Conference
It was all about potatoes at the annual “Home Economics and Technology Teachers Association New Zealand (HETTANZ) Conference”, held recently at Havelock North High School in the Hawkes Bay. Scott Lawson, owner of True Earth Organics discussed the nature of harvesting, processing and selling NZ’s favourite vegetable and why Scott chooses to stamp his name on every single bag of potatoes he produces. GET READY TO VOTE – 2018 Peoples Choice Best Chips Competition
Kicking-off in August, we will be asking the people of New Zealand to shine the light on where and who cooks their favourite hot chips.
This award will be purely a popularity contest, done by online voting on the Chip Group website. The only requirement for stores is that they completed The Chip Group’s FREE online training in 2018.
The winner will be announced at a special event in Auckland in September – stay tuned for more details
