Potato Tuber Moth has become the predominant insect pest species in the Pukekohe growing region, causing significant financial losses for growers in the region. As a consequence, Potatoes New Zealand initiated a research programme (PNZ-82) designed to better manage the pest.

As part of this programme Potatoes New Zealand will be carrying out a field trial to test a range of chemicals not commonly used to manage the pest. In order to identify an appropriate site for the trial Fruitfed has installed several traps in different location in the region. The trail will be located at a site where pest pressure is highest.

Call to action

Growers and advisers should be checking crops for any signs of larvae, and keep checking soil conditions.

Potatoes New Zealand is keen to provide more detailed trapping information to growers. In order to achieve this, we will need the cooperation of as many growers in the region as possible. If you are willing to share your trap results with Potatoes New Zealand we will compile region wide summary (no grower names or exact locations will be listed). If you have trap results you are willing to share, please contact Daniel Sutton or phone 027 473 2381 with any queries.
