Water, Soil & Environment: new MfE policies & Regional plan changes

Stage 1 – for the next 5 years
Ministry for Environment’s new Freshwater Management Proposal requires growers across New Zealand to develop and implement a Farm Environment Plan (FEP) by 2022. Growers in many regions (eg: Canterbury) are already required to develop an FEP to maintain permitted activity status and/or to support their application for resource consent to farm.
Horticulture NZ are recommending growers register for NZGAP’s Environment Management System (EMS) add-on to meet the requirement for FEPs.
PNZ’s regulatory consultant also recommends this FEP as it is fully audited by AsureQuality or SGS alongside the usual NZGAP audit.
This will enable growers to demonstrate to regulators that they are adapting good environmental practice.
Click on these links for info and to register. EMS info and NZGAP EMS add-on registration.

Stage 2 – Emissions Taskforce
The Emissions Project PNZ-79 & it’s taskforce will further develop tools to ensure the ongoing social and regulatory license to grow in the future. Read about our first taskforce meeting on the 13th September, click here. A brief project summary can be found here.

Regional Plans & National Policies: Make your Submissions

All submissions for ECAN’s Plan Change 7 have been received, these include a submission from PNZ & Hort NZ.

Submissions for Horizon’s Plan Change 2 are due on the 31st October 2019. PNZ have created a pro-forma submission for potato growers to make their own submission. This can be found and downloaded on our website here or directly download the PDF here. PNZ are making an industry submission but recommend individual farm submissions too.

An overview of all National Consultations can be found here, scroll to the bottom of the linked page for the overview table.
